Selecting Goals
Lifestyle change goals are a matter of personal choice.
Mentors should find ways to embrace the goals of others.
It is counterproductive for you to impose your personal
goals. By embracing someone's health goals, you will not
undercut the enthusiasm that is needed for success.
Fortunately, most lifestyle choices are interrelated.
With a little bit of support and patience, you are
likely to see your own goal preferences emerge.
Get
clarification about the goals by discussing the
following goal setting questions:
-
How will
you know when you are successful? Try to get as
specific as possible.
-
What are smaller benchmarks that you will achieve before
reaching the big goal? Both short and long-term
goals provide a sense of momentum and make it
possible to visualize the best outcome.
-
Discuss
whether this goal is both inspirational and
obtainable. Picking a challenging and worthy goal is
important. It is also helpful to pick a goal that is
within the realm of possibility.
-
What are
some of the reasons for taking on this goal now?
Clarifying some of the benefits of change will help
reinforce the goals.
-
What
experience, if any, have you had with this type of
goal before? If you have had some experience
with this goal, what seemed to work and what didn't
seem to work? Learning from past experience and
personal preferences can shape a new and improved
plan for success.
