Planning for Mentoring Sessions

Discuss the best time and place for your mentoring sessions. It best to schedule 45 to 60 minutes for each session. Although some mentoring can happen on the phone or via email, a weekly face-to-face meeting usually works best. Pick a place that is quiet, offers some privacy and is convenient.

Discuss the best way to contact one another between mentoring sessions. Explain any limits you would like to establish to these contacts. For example, it would be useful to know what times of the day it would be inappropriate to call.

Although your mentoring relationship can continue for an extended period, it is best to establish an end date for your initial work. Two to three months is a good initial commitment. You may want to push for three months if there are a number of holidays or other scheduling conflicts that fall within your start and end dates. When the end date is reached, you can decide if further sessions would be useful.
