Defining
the Wellness Mentor Role
A Wellness Mentor is someone who offers
peer support to achieve behavior change goals.
Unlike Wellness Mentoring, some forms of mentoring assume that the
mentor has personal experience with achieving the same or a
similar wellness goal. And, sometimes mentors are chosen because
they are older and more experienced. This is not the case with
Wellness Mentoring. The Wellness Mentor role does not require
you to have any prior experience with the same or similar
lifestyle goal as your peer. Furthermore, we are not talking about an
older and/or more experienced person sharing his or her wisdom.
Wellness Mentoring is directed at peer
relationships between equals. The mentor should not have power
over his or her peer. For example, a supervisor or a parent
would not be an appropriate mentor.
Mutual support is not assumed. You can serve as the
mentor without setting any personal
goals. However, some of the best Wellness Mentoring
happens when two people help each other achieve a healthier
lifestyle.
