Learning Objectives

This training teaches skills needed to help someone achieve lasting and positive lifestyle change. The understandings and techniques taught in the course are evidence based in that they are supported by extensive health promotion and behavioral science research. You will practice these skills by assisting someone to change an unhealthy lifestyle practice. Although many of these peer support skills would be used by professional counselors and therapists, this course is directed at empowering you to offer your support on a more informal or voluntary basis.

As a result of participation in the Wellness Mentor Training, you will be able to:

  • Define the Wellness Mentor relationship.

  • Create a trusting and open support relationship. This skill set includes an ability to explain confidentiality and an ability to use a personal sharing exercise to increase mutual respect and understanding.

  • Assist in setting lifestyle change goals. This skill set includes familiarity with the "stages of change" model of behavior change.

  • Assist in identifying appropriate role models.

  • Assist in eliminating barriers to lifestyle change.

  • Assist in locating supportive environments.

  • Assist in working through relapse.

  • Assist in celebrating successful lifestyle change.

  • Organize an ongoing mentoring relationship.
