Discussing Confidentiality

Discuss confidentiality during your first mentoring session. Share what confidentiality means to you and any circumstances under which you will have to override your commitment to confidentiality. Such a conversation should also include vows that are similar to those offered below.

  • I recognize that my ability to provide support depends on your confidence and trust in me.
  • I recognize that what you tell me is in confidence.
  • I will not disclose anything you tell me to anyone without getting your permission.
  • I will never use the information you give me against you in any way.

Decide on the circumstances under which you would have to get outside assistance. You may decide, for example, that discussions of feeling suicidal or a threat to physically harm someone would be cause for getting help with or without permission. You should tell your peer about your decision concerning when it would be necessary for you to get outside assistance even without permission.
